The Problem
The FCM Report Dashboard, utilized by traveling managers to track expenses for flight tickets, air savings total tickets, hotels, cars, train, and fees, encountered several usability issues. Firstly, it was challenging for managers to locate the necessary information since it was dispersed among different tabs and concealed locations, resulting in difficulty of use. Secondly, the presentation of the information was uninteresting and complicated. Although the feedback from users indicated that the information was valuable, it needed to be presented in a simpler and more comprehensible manner.
Existing Dashboard
The images presented below exhibit an excessive amount of information, causing cognitive overload and making it difficult for users to determine where to begin. Additionally, certain pieces of information are grouped together despite not belonging to the same category. My responsibility was to sort through this clutter and organize the data in a meaningful way.
Making sense of the data
I took it upon myself to break down the overwhelming amount of information into more manageable pieces and group them in a way that is easily comprehensible to the user. Upon examining the diagram provided, I identified 7 distinct categories, each of which will be allocated its own tab. The Home tab will serve as a comprehensive summary of all the information contained within the other tabs.
Inspirational
After gaining a thorough understanding of the data, my subsequent critical step involved scouring the internet for inspiration. It is impossible to overstate the significance of this stage since examining other designers' work, reviewing past projects, and analyzing their solutions prove immensely beneficial. At the project's onset, due to its peculiar nature, I lacked access to the Developer. Consequently, I devoted a significant amount of time to research and reading on Data Visualization, analyzing various examples and data graphs available online.
Sketching Ideas
Another crucial step in the design process is sketching my ideas. During this phase, I strive to ascertain whether the data I'm working with is sensible. I scrutinize potential problem areas and am particularly vigilant for opportunities to creatively represent the data.
Final UI Designs 1
During a meeting to evaluate the first iteration of the prototype, several issues emerged, and I subsequently incorporated further design changes. This iterative process continued until we arrived at a satisfactory design that all parties deemed suitable for presentation to the Traveler Managers.
